I’m pretty sure all of you have heard “Personal Jesus”, and if you haven’t, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? “Personal Jesus” was released on August 29, 1989, and was the first single from Depeche Mode’s Violator album. According Wikipedia, the song reached #13 on the UK Singles Chart, #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in 2004 was ranked #368 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Oh, and Hilary Duff totally ripped it off.
Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore explained the song in a 1990 Spin article as “a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It’s about how [...]

“Blister in the Sun” is a song that everyone here had better know. It’s one of those tunes that, no matter what genre you’re into, you should recognize immediately just by the riff. “Blister in the Sun” never made a dent on the charts, but who cares… a song’s worth is not based on where it lands on the … or 1,000,000 for that matter.
Since we all know the song, it’s moot to say that you can find it on the Violent Femmes’ self-titled debut album, right?
I know that I usually post some excellent cover versions here, but there are times when I just can’t ignore the terror of a bad cover.
I’ll get right to the point [...]
One of the more interesting songs to come out of the 80’s is “When Doves Cry”, which came from The Purple One himself, Prince. I’m sure most every one of you know who Prince is… he’s The Purple One, after all.
For those of you that DON’T know who Prince is, then you’re probably a friend of my mom’s [...]

Joni Mitchell’s “River” has become, in many ways, a Christmas standard. To be honest, I’ve never quite understood this because the song is really quite depressing… and who wants to be depressed during the Christmas season?
I guess the fact that the song opens with “Jingle Bells” makes the connection to Christmas that [...]
A few years ago, my brother and I had a discussion about how vastly different our musical tastes are. He is a professor at NYU, and is totally into Broadway music. I, on the other hand… well, you know what my tastes are based on what this site is all about… [...]
I was watching the San Diego Chargers lose yet another football game this season… man it’s painful to see them lose, especially when they were the “ones to watch” this season. I gotta take a Tramadol after every loss just to ease the pain. So anyhow, a Viagra commercial came on [...]

When Coldplay first gained recognition, I was not impressed. I have no idea why I disliked them so much… probably because of all the comparisons to U2… and I’m sorry, but NOBODY comes close to U2, not even U2 themselves anymore.
But as time went on, I started to open up to Coldplay. [...]
I’ve always enjoyed cover versions of songs. A cover song can either be recorded differently or as close to the original as possible… whichever the case, it always makes for a fun listen. Very often I find that a good cover song can reinvigorate my interest in the original, like the [...]
