This is a guilty pleasure of mine. Book of Love's 1986 self-titled debut came to my attention via a friend of mine who was very much into Depeche Mode. She loved the synthpop sound and knew that I did as well, thus letting me borrow the extended remix for Book of Love's single "Boy." I must admit that I really liked this girl, so I wanted to be cool... I listened to it, said things like "That's cool" and "Wow you have great taste in music" and my favorite line ever, “Can I put my head between those?” In the end, I didn’t get the girl but actually did enjoy the music. She’s married now and has two kids, by the way. Plus she hates Superman. I don’t see how anybody can hate Superman. [...]" title="Book of Love: Book of Love" />

Some say under different circumstances, The Alarm would have become the biggest rock band in the world. Some say that the only thing standing in their way was this other band called U2. While I can see the comparison, I can also safely say that The Alarm wasn’t just a pale copy of the Irish band. The Alarm had their own voice and style to deliver. • The first time I discovered Echo & the Bunnymen was through a fellow music lover pal of mine, Troy. He told me that Echo & the Bunnymen “rocks,” and that my florescent socks sucked. At first I wanted to haul off on him because it was common knowledge that chicks dug the florescent look, but then it dawned on me that a better way of getting back at him was to dedicate my life to showing the world why Echo & the Bunnymen does NOT, in fact, “rock.” [...]

  • We made it… the final batch of Elvis Presley Outtakes…

I managed to stretch it out to ten installments! At first I thought I’d only make nine, but after some quick shuffling around, I made it to ten! Is anybody out there proud of me?

No? AWWWWWWWW :-(

That’s ok, though, because I’m glad we’ve hit the last of the bunch. [...]

  • I just realized that this is the second 1986 album I’m writing about. I guess I really dig that year.

My first introduction to New Order was through the Pretty in Pink soundtrack (one of the best 80’s compilation albums, in my humble opinion). Their tracks “Shellshock” sounded so new to me in the midst of all the synthesizer bands at the time. When I learned that another one of their songs, “Elegia,” was in the movie (but not the soundtrack), I knew I wanted to know more about the band [...]
