It’s amazing how much of an impact television is for music nowadays. I’ve discovered so many excellent songs through various commercials and shows… it’s staggering. Right off the top of my head, I can name a few: Jet‘s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” U2‘s “Vertigo,” 30 Seconds to Mars“Kings & Queens,” and Christina Perri‘s “Jar of Hearts.”

If you recall, Perri’s “Jar of Hearts” exploded in popularity months ago after appearing on the television show, So You Think You Can Dance. Since then, the song has sold more than 350,000 copies, hit #28 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs charts, and landed her a record deal with Atlantic Records.

The music video hit the VH-1 Top 20, and she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. All from a television show about dancing.

Pretty spectacular.

And now, her debut live EP, The Ocean Way Sessions, is set to drop on November 9th. According to the press release, it “features a new piano-only version of ‘Jar Of Hearts’ as well as four new original compositions that she recorded with her band – ‘Bang Bang Bang,’ ‘Black + Blue,’ ‘Daydream,’ and ‘Tragedy.’ In addition to the audio, the entire session was captured on film, resulting in stunning live videos that accompany each track when purchased on www.christinaperri.com.”

Funny, I thought the original “Jar of Hearts” single was pretty much piano-only. I wonder why they had her redo it? Ohhhh, right… to make more money.

This must be an exciting time for the former waitress… in an July interview on EW.com, Perri describes the day she got the news that her song was to appear on the dance show:

The Friday before the show, I was having the worst day ever at work. I was getting yelled at, and there were terrible things happening, almost to where I thought I was in some show. I’m like, “Okay, this isn’t real.” I quit in my head like 17 times. I imagined this big, grandiose storming into the office and quitting. Which I didn’t do. But I got in my car at the end of the shift, and was really defeated. And I got the call that they’re using the song on that Wednesday’s episode

Often times you have to know what it feels like to scrape the bottom in order to have somewhere to go.

And television is the new radio.

  1. Have you seen this guy’s cover of the song? He does a nice job with it. I might even say I like it more than the original. And this? “Often times you have to know what it feels like to scrape the bottom in order to have somewhere to go.” Agree 100%.

  2. My presumption when I saw heard the song/saw the video was that the feelings expressed came from life experience. Apparently I was correct as I just checked out her website. In that respect, yes she is like other artists. Drawing from feelings/emotions/life.
She mentions Alanis Morissette in her bio. She certainly wrote about her life.
    Taylor Swift…………
I don’t know you, other than reading your website and listening to your songs, and get the feeling that some of your songs may have some life experience.

Not saying that all songs by artists are from their own personal experiences but I do think that they may draw from friends, family and heck even strangers experiences.

Has that made any sense? Brain is a little muddled from the migraine.
