Sunday Song Selection Sans Significance

alt text

I was all ready to do another post on the whole Kings of Leon Pigeongate thing, but after re-reading it, I decided not to because it’d be beating a dead horse. I’m hoping that KOL has taken a look at themselves and realized that there were at least a dozen options to explore before canceling the show. Will I keep listening to KOL? Sure. Although I wasn’t there, I can relate to those disappointed fans… but in the end I still enjoy their music. Just because Mel Gibson has apparently gone off the deep end doesn’t suddenly make Lethal Weapon 2 a terrible movie.

Ok, moving on…

So today is going to be an interesting day for Ol’ Swap. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been asked to lay down some vocals on a song… which may not seem like that difficult of a task… but here’s the thing: the song is in Chinese.

The last time I sung in Chinese was when I was a kid in Chinese school. I sang mainly children’s songs… songs about ducks, about having friends, about being a small bird… cute songs that didn’t really require much emotion or conviction. This time around, though, my mom had to help me learn how to pronounce some of the characters… she shook her head the whole time with the “tsk tsk” look in her eyes.

She then asked me in Chinese, “How you forget so much Chinese?”

“Well, I don’t speak it unless I’m with you and dad. Most of my friends don’t speak Chinese.”

“They should. You tell them learn Chinese now or else they forget their English, too.”

“What? That doesn’t make any sense, mom.”

“Maybe because I said it in Chinese and since your Chinese so awful you no understand.”

So I’ve got about a day to rehearse this tune. It’s a good song and I want to do it justice. The weirdest thing is hearing my voice sing in a language other than English. Let me elaborate… the weirdest thing is hearing my voice try to sing emotionally in a language other than English.

This will be quite an experience. I figure that even if I have to record the song line by line, I’ll eventually nail it!

Wish me luck! And now for your enjoyment, here’s some music to check out.
