If you’re like me, you’re always looking for new ways to discover new music. Music blogs are an excellent source, and as The Prez Obama always says, “TheFrontloader.com is perhaps the best music blog ever created on the face of the Earth, and maybe if we all listen to folks like Ol’ Swap, bands like Wham! would never split up,” and I never disagree with The Prez… unless I do. Anyhow, I came across a site the other day (thanks to @thewordpainter) called GoRankem.com that is an excellent source for checking out new or old artists.

GoRankem.com allows you to not only find out how fans rank their favorite artist’s songs, but it lets you do the same as well. It’s a great way to discover new music… if you’re not familiar with an artist, just look them up on GoRankem.com and take a gander to what their fans think are their best songs… that’s often a good place to start. The site also offers snippets of each selection, so if you like what you hear, you now have a way of going about discovering more about the artist. I would highly recommend GoRankem.com… it’s fun, it’s informative, and it’s a site I’m sure I’ll visit quite often. You can follow @rankem on Twitter here.

After creating an account on GoRankem.com, I thought I was all ready to rank some songs, but then I realized just how big of an undertaking that task is. I’ve always tried to avoid doing these kinds of lists because I’d like to think that I don’t have “favorite” songs per se, but rather I have song “preferences” that change as my life changes. After thinking about it some more, I have concluded that I DO have favorites… they’re the songs I go to no matter what. They’re the songs that have remained constant even when everything doesn’t. They’re the songs that define the artist to me.

So because of The Black Crowes‘ impending indefinite hiatus and new album Croweology, I thought I’d list my top 10 favorite songs from their catalog. It didn’t take me long to make this list, but it took me a while to commit to them because I’m just that kind of guy. I tried to find live boots of each song that I haven’t posted before, so forgive me if there are doubles.

Yeah, I also noticed that the majority of the songs are from The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and Amorica, but who can deny that those are great albums that pretty much set the tone for their career? So here’s my top 10… what’s yours?
