Blood Red Shoes: Don’t Ask

There’s a website called TheSixtyOne.com that is a great resource for finding new music. I can’t quite describe what the site/community is like because I haven’t spent an incredible amount of time there, but so far it hasn’t disappointed me.

One band that I came across is Blood Red Shoes. They’re a two-piece… kind of like The White Stripes except backwards: the girl plays guitar, the guy plays drums, and they both sing. I heard one song, then immediately went to their official site to find out more. The video for the song “Don’t Ask” is featured there… I clicked “play” and then was completely floored by what I heard.

The first word that came to mind was “power.” The second was “Man ALIVE what a rush! I have GOT to play this song again and then perhaps make a sandwich but with gluten-free bread which doesn’t taste quite like bread but it’s ok because I’m getting used to it!”

Bands that consist of guitar/drum instrumentation are becoming more commonplace. The White Stripes (as mentioned before), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Ting Tings (kind of) and The Black Keys have all done well for themselves, and from what I gather, Blood Red Shoes are not doing bad, either. The key is that all these groups have good songs. I think we can all agree that the instrumentation ultimately doesn’t matter if it’s a good song.

Blood Red Shoes (Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter) first met while playing around in different bands. Then one fateful day they decided to have an informal jam session… that jam session went so well they had another, and another, and another… they’re still have jam sessions, just making a lot of new fans along the way. You can probably tell from their accents that they’re not from California but from Brigthon, England. I would’ve guessed Nevada, but then I’d be so wrong. I couldn’t be any wronger, in fact. I could try, but I would fail.

Check out this live performance of “Don’t Ask.” I’m seriously impressed an really want to keep tabs on them.

Unfortunately, Blood Red Shoes are not going to be in the states anytime soon… but hey, if I’m in the Netherlands in November, I can catch their show. Fat chance THAT happening unless someone buys me a ticked to the Netherlands. I honestly don’t even know what’s in the Netherlands besides Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, and the Lost Boys.

Check out “Don’t Ask” below in the Dig-It section. I hope you like it as much as I do.
