Last week I posted the first Bruce Springsteen bootleg of the year. Today’s another first for 2010… Ryan Adams bootleg!
This one dates back to 2002, just a couple of weeks before the release of his Demolition record. This is actually one of my favorite Adams albums. In an interview to CNN.com, Adams states that “Demolition came about totally by accident. Some of it are the demos for “Gold” (my last record), some of it are just recordings I made for fun, and then there’s a session I did in Stockholm … It’s a taste of these different things at once, and to me they all seem to fit together.” It’s an interesting sounding record because there doesn’t seem to be a focal point in terms of style. There’s the Brit-pop song “Nuclear,” the Alt. Country sounding “Hallelujah,” the garage rock of “Starting to Hurt,” and then there’s the country flavored “Chin Up, Cheer Up” and the experimental “Jesus (Don’t Touch My Baby).” As Adams says, though, they all seem to fit together despite this.
He only does a few numbers off Demolition on this bootleg… there’s a great selection of songs from his past albums (at the time) as well as my all-time favorite Adams song, “Oh My Sweet Carolina.”
The sound quality is excellent, so if you’ve always wanted an acoustic Adams bootleg, this is definitely one to grab. He does use an electric guitar on “To Be Young,” but that’s ok because it suits the song so well. Besides, it’s his song so he can play it however the heck he wants to play it.
By the way, his new “metal” album, ORION, is available now. I haven’t heard it yet because I’ve been too engrossed in his early material. I’ll make a note to check it out, though… it’s in limited release, so I’d best get a move on a order the bloody thing.
