Man ALIVE it’s been a bit of a while since I’ve posted anything here… I’ve been so busy with my summer class that I haven’t had time for much else. A whole semester crammed into 7 weeks… ZOINKS! I’m doing well in the class, though… last week’s test was a doozy (doozie?) but I think I conquered it with authority. Hopefully I don’t get my test back and say “Awwww! I SUCK!”

Anyhow, I’ve rediscovered the song “Goodbye” this past week. It was originally written by Steve Earle, but the version I dig the mostest is by Emmylou Harris. Her rendition is off her 1995 record, Wrecking Ball. It was produced by Daniel Lanois (he co-produced a lot of U2 stuff) and won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. It’s a stellar album… definitely one to pick up whether you’re a Harris fan or not.
Interestingly enough, Larry Mullen, Jr. of U2 plays drums on Wrecking Ball.
I’m not sure if I’ve posted “Goodbye” before, and frankly my dear, I don’t give a hoot if I have. It’s always worth hearing and always worth posting. This heart wrenching song always makes me drift off into another time, another place. Where exactly that time or place is, I don’t know… but it probably falls somewhere between June and September of 1993 because that’s when I went out with this girl Darlene… she was an absolute bore to be with, but man alive could she suck… on a hose to siphon gas from other cars. Yup. That’s why I went out with her: for free gas.
Our typical date would be something like this:
7pm – I pick her up
7:05pm – we find a parking lot and start siphoning gas
8:35pm – I buy her some KFC to thank her
8:37pm – I drop her off and say goodbye
And that’s where “Goodbye” comes in. The tag on the song is “I can’t remember if we said goodbye.” Well, I frankly can’t recall if I ever said “goodbye” to Darlene, or if I just opened the door and said “Laters!” Hmmm… I’ll have to think about that.
Here’s a live performance of the song by Harris.
Ahhh… I just love her voice.
