The Black Crowes: Fake Concert Bootleg

alt text

I enjoyed making the “Fake Concert Bootleg” so much for Bruce Springsteen the other week that I decided to do the same for The Black Crowes.

I guess these fake bootlegs are a sort of a “mix tape” for live bootlegs. There’s no science to this… I just look through my live material and pick some of the songs that I would love to hear if I saw the band live. Fortunately for me, I’ve seen the Crowes live quite a few times, and have had the luck to hear most all of the songs I’ve wanted to hear done live. They always put on a great show, and I sincerely hope they continue to tour for decades.

The majority of these performances are taken from their Fillmore concerts in 2005… therefore, Mr. Marc Ford is present on most of the recordings. The sound quality is excellent, but the mix varies. I had to start with “Gone” off of Amorica, simply because it’s got one of the gr-r-r-o-o-o-o-viest grooves that ever grooved. There’s also the nice 12-minute jam of “Ballad of Urgency” that I’m sure you’ll dig, going straight into “Wiser Time.”

The highlight of this fake bootleg, though, has to be the cover of The Beatles“Get Back.” The Crowes have always been fantastic at covering material, and this one absolutely delivers. I really wish I could find more recordings of this version… take a listen to it and be prepared to mo-o-o-o-o-ve.

And of course, I have to end the she-bang with “My Morning Song,” perhaps the greatest set closer ever. The dynamics of this song never cease to floor me, especially during the middle jam part. This 17-minute rendition KILLS and builds to such an orgasmic level that you need to make sure you have tissues nearby while listening.

At the end of “My Morning Song,” Chris Robinson says that they have to “take a quick break to set up some other gear.” This is actually “Crowes-speak” for “We have to catch a flight to Upland, CA. to play a show in Swap’s backyard.” Yes, they’re sitting right next to me now, all ready to rock and roll in MY backyard. Say hello, fellas…

“Hello.”

Yes, that was Rich Robinson! Pretty hip.
