Deleted Scenes: Birdseed Shirt Album // New Tour Dates

Washington, DC based band Deleted Scenes is made up of four high school friends who played together, parted ways after graduation, and reconvened to play together as Deleted Scenes a few years later. With songwriters Dan Scheuerman (guitar/vocals) and Matt Dowling (bass/keys/vibes/flexotone) contributing equally to each song, and Brian Hospital (drums) and Chris Scheffey (guitar) rounding out the group, the band’s sound is complete.

Deleted Scenes released their debut album Birdseed Shirt on March 10th, and initially there was little fanfare surrounding the release. After receiving an 8.0 rating from the popular music site, Pitchfork, though, things have picked up, and the album has been receiving much critical praise. It’s been described as “an acid-trip that is absolutely habit forming” by Madison Isthmus, “gently glazed with cold medication” by The Onion, and “Steeped in a blurry digital haze” by the Washington City Paper.

We’ve posted three tracks from the album below in the Dig-It section, as well as a remix of “Ithaca” done by DC DJ AutoRock. As described by the band, the songs on the album are “an existential coming of age… songs of spiritual despair, hope, disgust, and manic-depression. Suffused with sadness, humor, self-loathing and post-post-modern self-dismissal, the lyrics are notable for contradictions that transcend simple irony.” Take a listen to the tracks below, and if you like what you hear, you can grab the album now on Amazon and iTunes.

Check out the video for “One Long Country Song” below, which was recently shot by Brightest Young Things. The band offers more insight about the creation of the video by explaining, “It’s illegal to shoot on the DC Metro for homeland security reasons. Luckily nobody arrested us. The setting is perfect for its continual interplay with the lyrics. The song begins ‘It’s one long country song to the Metro / which is five blocks by anyone else’s count,’ and proceeds to process the previous evening’s romantic disaster through the bleary brain-chemistry of an awkward all-nighter.” An announcement from the conductor concludes the one-shot performance at DC’s Dupont Circle Metro station, which is actually the station in which the song was written.
