The Mary Onettes: “Dare”

alt text

After a string of bad luck, which included not only his computer hard drive containing almost every song he’s ever recorded with his band The Mary Onettes being stolen from his car, but also his back up of those files being lost due to a power failure at home, Philip Ekström took to the band’s MySpace blog to announce the band’s release of a new three track EP titled Dare.

Explaining the time from the loss of material to the completion of the EP, Ekström writes “I was speechless for days. The only thing I felt was right at that moment was to take a break. A few days after the burglary we went to Spain to do the Primavera Festival and that was quite uplifting I have to say. Some kind of new hope was established. The summer went by, the longest summer I’ve ever had I think. A lot of unhappiness and unfortunate things came along, but despite the adversity we were able to start the recording process in late September again. To be honest it felt like a never-ending process. Still does. My lack of will to do it all over again was really obvious in the beginning of the recordings. But slowly I felt more and more comfortable with it.”

I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I lost EVERYTHING that I’d recorded. I’ve dealt with a major computer crash in the past, which was a nightmare, but thankfully I was able to recover almost all of my recordings. I just can’t imagine what a blow that had to be to him and the band.

Anyway, the new EP contains the title track, “Dare”, which we’ve posted in the Dig-It section below, as well as “Kicks”, and “God Knows I Had Plans”, two tracks that he calls “leftovers”… songs that they had but had just not recorded before.

The Mary Onettes have released three EPs and one full length album since the band’s inception in 2000. Ekström calls this EP a little taste of their upcoming album, which he says they are closer to releasing. If you dig what you hear below, stop by the band’s MySpace page for more info, news, and music, including streaming audio of another of the three tracks on Dare, “God Knows I Had Plans”.

I gotta say… this is a GREAT song. I don’t care if you have to go to the bathroom… hold it and take a listen.
