So Did The Fireworks Look Good?

Springsteen Halftime

Well, Super Bowl XLIII is now officially over. I am sure there will be writers out there who will call the game an “Instant Classic,” and in all honesty it probably will be one. The Steelers are the first franchise in history to win six Super Bowls. That’s a pretty amazing feat. I’m glad Kurt Warner had another appearance in the big game because he’s one of those great players that you just hope comes back to shine. I think he did, regardless of how the last play went.

Anyhow, since this is a music site and not a sports site, let us focus on Bruce Springsteen‘s halftime show. In a pre-Super Bowl interview, Bruce joked that they were just there “to make the fireworks look good”. So, how’d he do? Did the fireworks look good? He played four songs in the high energy halftime show, “Tenth Ave. Freeze Out,” “Born to Run,” (I called it) “Working On A Dream,” and “Glory Days.” I am curious to see what other Bruce fans thought of the performance. Did he live up to the hype? Was it a disappointment? Was it bitter sweet? Did he pick the right songs? (Ok, “Glory Days” was a given)

Was it worth the huge debate on whether Bruce “sold out” or not? I think he HAD to play a Super Bowl at some point. If I had the chance, I’d totally do it, too… it’s just one of those things you’d like to check off on your “To Do” list. I’m sure even BRUCE has a “To Do” list. Like the next thing on his list should be “Make Ol’ Swap my new best friend.” I’d better go wait by the phone!

In case you missed it, here’s Bruce doin’ what he does best…

It’ll be interesting to see how the songs off his new album, Working On A Dream, work in a live setting. Tonight’s inclusion of the song “Working On A Dream” was necessary (he’s got a new album to promote, after all), but in my opinion, it fell a bit flat… a gospel choir couldn’t even save it, and doesn’t a gospel choir usually save the day?

And what was with the referee???? There were bits that were too contrived, but I guess that’s the fun of it all. Bruce could also have done a better job reworking the lyrics to Glory Days… he could have sung it, “He could throw that pigskin by you / make you look like a fool, boy.” I dunno. Something like that.

Mr. Springsteen did an excellent job, though… he had so much energy that the Energizer Bunny would have said, “Dude!!” and he almost killed a cameraman with his groin. The band was in fine form, and sounded great with the Max Wienberg 7‘s horns. NICE.

We’ve got a new poll regarding the Super Bowl show that we’d LOVE for you to vote on. It’ll just take a second…
