Once again, here is another installment in the Elvis Presley Outtakes series. We’re coming on to the end, and I have to say that this next batch is perhaps my favorite of the lot so far.
It’s no question that Elvis was an incredible singer. His style was and still is unique, but one very cool thing that these outtakes demonstrate is his dedication and focus on his craft. A good example of this is “Treat Me Nice (takes 1-3).” Take a listen to the opening studio chatter… Elvis and the band are working out the intro for a bit, and then when they’re all ready to go, they hit it without any pause or hesitation to “get in character” or “get in the mood.” You don’t hear anyone saying, “You ready? Ok, you ready? Ok, you ready?” This track shows the evolution of the song’s arrangement, which is then finalized in the next track, “Treat Me Nice (take 15 – 45 Master).” Very cool.
The highlights of this collection, though are located at the end of this posting. “Let Me” and “Baby I Don’t Care” isolate Elvis’ voice and are presented a cappella. You can hear just how amazing his voice was, as you’re able to make out every little nuance of the vocal performance. I LOVE what he does at the ends of the verses in “Let Me.”
I hope this outtake series has given you a deeper appreciation for Elvis’ talent and music. His talent seemed effortless… but I guess that’s why he’s The King and I’m not.
