Kanye West Is At It Again

Kanye West is at it again.

It seems that he has officially pronounced himself as the voice of this generation. Let me make sure I have the quote correct… in an interview he gave to Derrik Lang, West states that:

“I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice. It’s me settling into that position of just really accepting that it’s one thing to say you want to do it and it’s another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan.”

Wow.

Wait a minute… Mr. West, someone else needs to give you that title. If you give yourself a title, it means nothing. And besides, what generation are you the “voice” of? The generation of conceited self-centered egomaniacs? If that is the case, then the answer is probably “Yes.”

There is no question that West is a talented artist. His album The College Dropout is an exceptional piece of work, one which deserves all the accolades it received. But artists should remain humble with their craft and let others celebrate it. If an artist celebrates their own craft, calling it “genius” or “brilliant” on their own, that effectively means nothing because what ELSE is an artist going to say about their own personal work? That it is horrible and not worth the time to check out?

Come on, Kanye… is this how you want to be remembered?

His new album, titled 808′s and Heartbreak, will be released on November 24. I am sure the album will be a hit and receive nominations from various awards committees, but I sincerely hope that Kanye understands that no amount of awards, money, platinum records, or adoring fans will apparently fill that void inside of him. He must have been really bullied or something as a child. Maybe some little pig-tailed girl beat him up in second grade, either that or other kids laughed at him in the boy’s locker room. Whatever the case may be, he is desperately trying to satisfy something he is missing.

Kanye is only 31 years old… he has a lifetime ahead of him. Let us pray he truly lives up to the label of “artist.” An “artist” creates something not only with their entire being, but they create something outside of themselves, through the fans of their work. THAT is the measure of a great artist… if all you leave behind is hatred, anger, and accusations, then what does that really say about your craft?

What are your thoughts? Do you think Mr. West has any merit in his self proclamation? Does ANY artist have that right to declare themselves “a voice of the generation?”

Good day.
