Kanye West is at it again.
It seems that he has officially pronounced himself as the voice of this generation. Let me make sure I have the quote correct… in an interview he gave to Derrik Lang, West states that:
Wow.
Wait a minute… Mr. West, someone else needs to give you that title. If you give yourself a title, it means nothing. And besides, what generation are you the “voice” of? The generation of conceited self-centered egomaniacs? If that is the case, then the answer is probably “Yes.”
There is no question that West is a talented artist. His album The College Dropout is an exceptional piece of work, one which deserves all the accolades it received. But artists should remain humble with their craft and let others celebrate it. If an artist celebrates their own craft, calling it “genius” or “brilliant” on their own, that effectively means nothing because what ELSE is an artist going to say about their own personal work? That it is horrible and not worth the time to check out?
Come on, Kanye… is this how you want to be remembered?
His new album, titled 808′s and Heartbreak, will be released on November 24. I am sure the album will be a hit and receive nominations from various awards committees, but I sincerely hope that Kanye understands that no amount of awards, money, platinum records, or adoring fans will apparently fill that void inside of him. He must have been really bullied or something as a child. Maybe some little pig-tailed girl beat him up in second grade, either that or other kids laughed at him in the boy’s locker room. Whatever the case may be, he is desperately trying to satisfy something he is missing.
Kanye is only 31 years old… he has a lifetime ahead of him. Let us pray he truly lives up to the label of “artist.” An “artist” creates something not only with their entire being, but they create something outside of themselves, through the fans of their work. THAT is the measure of a great artist… if all you leave behind is hatred, anger, and accusations, then what does that really say about your craft?
What are your thoughts? Do you think Mr. West has any merit in his self proclamation? Does ANY artist have that right to declare themselves “a voice of the generation?”
Good day.

He has some spectacular talent as far as his music goes but as far as his personality…he annoys me on many levels. His cocky attitude and nasty attitude has kind of ruined his music for me.
And no I think if you give yourself a title that involves speaking for an entire generation then maybe said title should at least come from some folks of that generation.
I would agree with the Divine Miss Min! Let us take her as example shall we? She did not say upon her followers “OH build me a shrine of fine handbags and footwear and fill it will oodles of tiarras and things that sparkle so that I may bestow upon you my great beauty and wisdom”
No, I think not.
Kanye turned me off ages ago when he threw a hissy fit when someone won a best new artist award instead of him. I don’t remember who won, I don’t remember which awards show it was, but I do remember how he acted. I haven’t paid attn to him since. That says a lot, I think.
People (artists, actors, whoever) that go around tooting their own horn and bashing others for their own gain annoy the crap out of me. If you need to do that, then you’re obviously trying to prove something to yourself as well – definitely a void. Yeah, I’m going with the girl with the pigtails deal.
Great Sherman pic, btw.
BWAH!!!!!
Well said Sherman! I have never been able to get past Kanye’s attitude so I can’t enjoy his music.
Maybe he should say that coz’ the awards didn’t yet been released and held down on his name. But if he said he’s a good singer indeed no doubt he’s a good artist and singer. That’s why he has lots of records. Kanye West
He can’t be the voice of our generation, because I am. He can be the secondary voice or something maybe. It’s like I’m President and he’s the Treasurer.
I can also turn water into wine…so there.
Who is Kanye West and exactly what generation is he speaking for?
I don’t listen to his music and I think he seems like an ass.
Mr West is not one of my favorite people, and neither is his noise that he claims is music. As for being the “LOUDEST VOICE”…. Empty vessels always sound the loudest.
Kanye’s music is ok. At times. The rest of him seems to need a few tweaks.
