Led Zeppelin Live 1975 in San Diego, CA. (part 2)

Here you are, as promised, the second half of the 1975 San Diego Led Zeppelin show. I hope you all dug part one of this show. Some of the files in this half are pretty ginormous, like “Moby Dick.” (insert phallic joke here) I think the biggest file is for “Dazed and Confused,” because this particular version is over 30 minutes long. That’s pretty normal for the song, though. I’ve read instances where they managed to stretch this song out to about an hour.

Wow. An hour. On ONE song. Robert Plant must’ve been overjoyed and took a nap during Page’s solo. Let it never be said that Jimmy Page didn’t earn his keep.

One of my favorite performances in this bootleg is “Trampled Under Foot.” I love the groove, and being a keyboardist myself, I totally dig the Clavinet that the song is centered around. John Paul Jones is an underrated keyboardist… I’ve always wondered what’s playing the bass in this performance. Anybody know? It doesn’t sound like the bass notes of a Clav. I wonder if he’s using foot pedals or something, the way Geddy Lee does in Rush.

Anyhow, the lyrics are exceptionally gritty, sexual, and downright dirty here. I don’t know how many of you have ever taken the time to figure out what Plant is singing, so here are a few choice lines:

Dig that heavy metal underneath your hood
Baby, I could work all night, believe I’ve got the perfect tools

Factory air-conditioned, heat begins to rise
Guaranteed to run for hours, mama it’s a perfect size

Feather-light suspension, coils just couldn’t hold
I’m so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors

In between these verses he just sings the refrain “Talkin’ ‘bout love.” If anybody has a question as to whether he’s singing about cars or girls, let me answer that with a resounding “GIRLS.”

Jimmy Page’s solo is outrageously sloppy in this song, which is just awesome to hear. He’s often criticized for his sloppiness, but I think it adds to the message of “Trampled Under Foot.” Sex is sloppy. If it ain’t sloppy, you ain’t doin’ it right.

‘Nuff said.

Enjoy and let me know you’re out there!
